Geography: Immigration and the American Culture

Immigration and the American Culture

You took notes on the documentary “Island of Hope, Island of Tears”. This told of many push and pull factors that led many immigrants to come to leave their own countries and come to America.

You are to write an essay that explains these push and pull factors.  Using your notes, explain what drove many immigrants to make the crossing across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. This essay should include the following:

  • Describe in detail the push and pull factors
  • Use the images you saw to further explain the push factors.  Use examples.
  • What do you think the video meant by this being the “largest human migration” in history?
  • Why do you think they made the trip under the horrible conditions to come to America?
  • Why do you think Ellis Island was called the Island of Hope and Island of Tears?
  • Use a true story of an immigrant and relate it to the experiences told about in the documentary.
  • Research an immigrant’s story and describe why the person left, what it was like traveling here, and what their experiences were like once they got here (diary entries would be a good place to start).

This MUST be typed, size 12, Times New Roman Font, and double-spaced and will be DUE Tuesday, October 15, 2013.  This will count as a TEST grade.

Alternative GEOGRAPHY Assignment

Alternative GEOGRAPHY Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to act as an alternate assignment for the “Regional Culture” group assignment that was not completed in class.  Completing this alternate assignment will ensure you do not receive a zero for a project grade.  HOWEVER, should you fail to turn this assignment in or PLAGIARIZE this assignment; you will receive an automatic zero.

Instructions:
You were to research and complete a presentation on your assigned region of the United States (northeast, south, midwest, west).  Because you did not complete this project, you are now required to write a research paper on this region.   Your research paper MUST be at least 3-5 typed pages on AT LEAST four of the following items:

·        Industry
·        Culture
·        Commercial Activity
·        Tourist Activity
·        Major Attractions
·        Major Cities
·        Landscapes/Terrain

·        Why do you think your assigned region is important to the success of the United States?  What is its contribution?
YOU MUST ANSWER THIS QUESTION:  What did you learn about your region?  Give at least three things new you learned.  Also, if you had to recommend this region of the United States to someone to visit, what would be the top three reasons you would tell them to visit.  Explain with details.

PLEASE DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!!!!

This research paper will take the place of the project you did not complete for class.  If you have any questions, please feel free to ask Mrs. Yancie.

DUE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013.
