8C - Basil the Bulgar Slayer

In class we are learning about the Byzantine empire and its glorious history. This includes many men and women and who achieved great feats and held beliefs that made this empire memorable during its day. One such was Basil the II, known as an emperor who ruled over the "Golden Age" of the Byzantine Empire.

Analyze the following painting. Who are the people being represented in the painting? Why would the artist show them in the painting? What is the message the artist is sending in this piece of art? How does it reflect the culture of the time period?

This is due by Monday, 8:00 a.m. All posts after this time will be considered late and will only receive, at the most, half credit.

  1. After looking over the painting the people in the painting are people who worship Christianity, but at the same time respect Basil for his well-doing. The artist would show them in the painting because it would only fit the religion and Basil. The angels and god is to represent that Basil is a firm believer in Christianity, the people on the wall look to be some of Basil's warriors, the people bowing down to him look like ordinary people showing appreciation for bringing back something they had a passionate about. The message the artist is trying to convey is that Christianity is a peaceful, loving religion and even people who have a bad reputation can be apart of it. It fits the time period because they were trying to spread Christianity throughout the empire in many different ways.

  2. The people are being represented as those who have deep and high respect for Basil. I believe that the artist showed them in the painting because he wanted the people of our day and time to see that Basil was honorable and very well respected for what he has done for the Byzantine Empire and the progress that has been made while he was the emperor. The message that the artist is sending is that if you protect those who are following after you or who are depending on you and lead them down the right path and teach them what is right and what is wrong. They will follow you without you having to turn your back every 5 minutes to see they are running away or trying to stabbing you in your back. They will be loyal to you if you treat them the right way and don't act like you are better or above them. It reflects the culture of that time period because they had already been let down or been through defeat and they needed someone who they can depend and count on no matter what was about to go down. They needed someone they could look to and who shared the same beliefs as them. They didn't want to change what they believed just to make their leader which is their emperor happy, or treat them like they meant nothing to Basil.

  3. The people bowing down to Basil are being represented as the worshipers of Christianity. They are bowing down to Basil because he is sort of their religious guidance teacher, such as a preacher. They are followers of him and help him spread the word out about the Christian religion and Jesus Christ. The people aside Basil seems to be his warriors, sort of his security guards. The angles are on top of him crowning and Jesus is above holding what looks like the top piece of the crown, which I looks like Jesus chose Basil to spread the word about him and his religion. The artist showed them in the picture to show that Basil was a good religious leader and that he had curious and loyal followers willing to learn more about the Christian religion. The message is that if you have ones that believe in what you believe in are trustworthy and will protect you and you wont have to worry about your own people betraying you. It reflects the culture of that time period because of being betrayed through defeat. They would need strong people willing to stay through all harsh situations and not betray them or leave. They people could help Basil restore the churches and spread the Christian belief and keep the Golden Age alive.

  5. The people that are being represented as the people who gave Basil all of their respect and who worshipped the religion Christianity. In my opinion I think the artist would show them in the painting because he wanted to show how Basil was important to the Byzantine Empire. The painting of God and the angel represents Christianity which Basil believed in. The people kneeling down represents the citizens that worship him. The people on the wall behind Basil could represent some warriors that have died or some very good leaders. The message of the painting is that Basil is a very good leader and Christianity was the best religion. I think this was the message because people were bowing down to Basil and everything in the background has something to do with the Christianity religion. It reflects the culture of our time period because he wanted to expand Christianity in anyway that they could spread it.

  6. In this picture I see Jesus Christ above Basil and the angels touching his head and his staff. I think this represents how Basil is ruling with Christianity or him spreading the word about Christianity. The people at the bottom of the painting are worshiping Basil. I think the artist put those people in the painting to show that Basil was respected or honored because he ruled under Christianity. I think the people beside possibly are the people who helped him with his decisions or possibly his gaurds. I think the artist put them in the painting to show what, how, and who the Byzantine Empire was ruled by.I think the message is that ruling under Jesus Christ is a good thing and that people will worship you willingly without you having to doubt them. I think this reflects the culture of this time period because at this time people worshiped more than one person.

  7. The people in the picture represent followers of Christianity. They are showed in the painting to let people know that Basil's doings worked. The message that the author is trying to send is that Basil ruled well under the will of God. God is on top of Basil to show where Basil was influenced by God.The angels are watching over Basil to protect him and the soldiers are making sure that Basil isn't harmed and that the people are embracing Christianity. This reflects the culture of the time period because Basil was spreading Christianity. He restored churches and converted Slavs and others to Christianity during this period.

  8. I believe that the people being represented int he painting are Christian followers of Basil II.These people are being represented because Basil II believed in spreading Christianity with his doings. The artist would show them in the painting to convey Basil II's work of teaching others Christianity and it shows that his work has payed off because everyone is showing him respect and honorability. I believe that the message the author is trying to send is that Basil II's leadership reflected on the Byzantine Empire. For example, the people bowing beneath him show that his dedication has worked and there are paintings next to him that seem to be other kings that may have ruled before him, but he seems to be honored the most. This painting reflects the culture of the time period because of how much people were influenced by their kings. The citizens of the Byzantine Empire were influenced by Basil II's ways and it caused them to follow in his footsteps. In conclusion, this painting represents Basil II's leadership skills throughout the years of his empire.

  9. I believe the people in the picture are represented as Christian worshipers. They are shown in the picture to represent Basil's religion and they're religion. Also, they are shown to say that they respect Basil and to show that he has taught them the religion of Christianity. The message the artist is trying to tell us is without God every step of the way Basil wouldn't be a good ruler. This reflects the culture of this time period because Christianity was on the rise. Also, it reflects because Basil and his empire was spreading Christianity. As they speared the new religion people started to religion and be behind Basil. Also, empires started to convert to Christianity.

  10. The general population are being spoken to as the individuals who have profound and high regard for Basil. I trust that the craftsman demonstrated to them in the artistic creation since he needed the general population of our day and time to see that Basil was decent and extremely very much regarded for what he has accomplished for the Byzantine Empire and the advancement that has been made while he was the ruler. The message that the craftsman is sending is that on the off chance that you ensure the individuals who are trailing you or who are relying upon you and lead them down the right way and show them what is correct and what isn't right. They will tail you without you turning your back like clockwork to see they are fleeing or attempting to wounding you in your back. They will be faithful to you on the off chance that you treat them the right way and don't act like you are better or above them. It mirrors the way of life of that time period since they had as of now been let down or been through thrashing and they required somebody who they can depend and rely on regardless of what was going to go down. They required somebody they could look to and who had the same convictions as them. They would not like to change what they trusted just to make their pioneer which is their head upbeat, or treat them like they don't implied anything to Basil

  11. I think that the people shown in the painting are the worshipped, and the worshippers. The worshipped being God and Basil, and the worshippers being the people and also Basil to an extent. The artist would show them in the painting to explain how the cycle of religion and worship was in the "Golden Age" of the Byzantine Empire. The people bowing down to Basil worship him and God, and Basil worships God only. The artist is trying to send the message that worship and religion are what is driving the empire to popularity since Christianity is on the rise. The artwork reflects the culture of the time period by displaying the cultural beliefs of the people and also showing signs of cultural diffusion since the bowing people have varying skin tones and physical features.

  12. The people being represented in the photo are christians. I can con Clyde that because there are angles and God huverring over them. The people that are bowing down to Basil are the citizens of the Byzantine Empire . They are bowing to him to thank him for all the good he has done for them. The message that the artist is trying to convey is that eventhough they may bow to their emporer their religion is still above all. This reflects the time periods by showing how citizens showed their affection to the emperor and still could abide by the rules of their religion.

  14. Some believe that Basil the Bulgar slayer was a ruthless and fearless Emperor of the Byzantine Empire. He was called basil the Bulgar slayer because of powerful victories and his insane thing he did to his enemies. He has great accomplishments and beliefs. So I think the people being represented in the painting are Basil II Emperor middle with a leader outfit on and 2 angel putting a crown on his head. At the top represent God or Jesus with a dome as something in his hand looking over Basil II. The people on the side could represent his loyal soldiers or warriors. At the bottom seems to be people that are worshipping him.
The artist is showing them in the painting to show overall Christianity and his religious influence. The angels and God or Jesus bring out the artwork on Christianity. The artist is showing the warriors by him being a loyal leader.
The message the artist is sending in this piece of art is Basil II belief in Christianity. He the Emperor over all with loyal soldiers and faithful worshipper bowing down to him. Also God is the Ruler over him. That God is watching over everyone.
This reflect the culture of this time period known as the “Golden Age” by this great piece of artwork. The artwork and Christianity was powerful during this time. It reflects the cultures of art and religious belief. Also reflects on the culture of leadership.

  15. The people being represented in the painting are Basil the II, Jesus Christ, two angels, what appears to be six warriors on the wall, and some of Basil's loyal followers. The artist showed them in the painting to show that Basil was a highly respected leader, and that he led a christian empire. The message that the artist is trying to send is that everyone loved Basil for who he was and not for what he did. He is trying to show how much God appreciated him too by putting Jesus over his head and two angels at each side. The artist also shows how pure he was, because he put a golden circle around his head like Jesus and the angels. This reflects the culture of the period by showing how much of a christian empire the Byzantine Empire was in the golden age.

The angels and God seem to be watching over and protecting Brasil. The men in armor represent Basil's soldiers. The message the artist is trying to send in this piece of art is that Basil ruled well based on his beliefs of God and Christianity. The painting reflects the culture of the time period because they were showing how much Christianity spead in the Byzantine Empire

  17. After looking at this picture, I can see that it is represetning Christianity. Jersus Christ is above Basil. On the side of Basil are angels. Below Basil are Basil's followers/worshippers. I think the artist is showing them in the picture, because he wants to show how Basil's followers worhippedd him, because of the type of person he was. The message the artist is trying to send to send is that, you have many people who look up to you, even if you've had a bad past. There are angels to guide you through also. The artist is also trying tp send is that, if you believe in Christianity, then Jesus Christ will look over you and angels will help you. This picture reflects the culture of the time period because pictures and symbols were very important. Chtistianity was also important.

  19. After analyzing the picture, I see how it represents power in Christianity. Jesus is above Basil as if he is working through Basil, and he sent the angels by Basil's head to help him. I think the people on the sides of Basil are his ancestors, and in the end Basil is the most powerful because he has Jesus watching over him. The people at Basil's feet are worshipers, and some of them represent his revenge on Bulgaria because some have only one eye, and his revenge was to blind Bulgaria's soldiers and leave every one hundredth man with one eye. They started to follow Basil because by getting revenge on Bulgaria, he shows how powerful he truly is. In this time period the Byzantine Empire was converting to Christianity so by showing the angels and Jesus above Basil it's as if he cannot be defeated because he has the power of God in him, basically he is all powerful and cannot be defeated.

  20. After looking at this picture I see God, Basil, angels, soldiers/helpers, and worshippers. God on the top represents that God is the greatest, Basil in the center meaning he is working with god as a missionary, angels on the side meaning they are watching over and protecting Basil, soldiers or the helpers to help the missionaries, and the people at the bottom are there to worship. The message the author is sending is that Basil is working with god as a missionary to spread the word to non Christians. It reflects the culture of the time because during this time Christianity was starting to spread and they had a good king to rely on this time around.

  21. The people in this painting represent God, angels, and followers of Jesus Christ. To me it looks like God is guiding him, the angels are also guiding him and sending him duties from God and the people at the bottom are the followers. He sorta looks like a disciple in this picture because of all the people following him. I think the artist would include these people in the painting because they played a significant role in his life and i think they made him who he is. He was like a on earth God almost.I think the message that the author was trying to get across was that Basil the 2nd played a very significant role in peoples lives and lots of people looked up to him while he was looking up to God. Although he did some crazy things to his enemies, he was worshiped by many and i also think that represents the people at the bottom of Basil.

  23. The representations that are being shown in this picture are what the Byzantine Empire what it is . Basil the II and Jesus Christ are what made the empire so unique. The artist has to portray them because with them it wouldn't show the full making of the empire . Also he had to show the significance and role of each individual in the picture. For example, Jesus Christ was what the empire was based upon; This is the reason he is at the top ,to show his rank . The artist is conveying that Basil was a earth realm representation of what Jesus wanted and a way to spread his word. In the picture it looks as if the angels are giving him his crown and spear ,as if they have placed him here specifically. Therefore he had the covering of angels(spiritual covering) and the covering of soldiers(physical covering) . This is why the people worshipped him because of the greatness that was bestowed inside him. This reflected the culture because during this this they had a powerful emperor and Christianity was spreading rapidly.

  25. In this picture I see Basil,2 angles and the people that influenced Basils decisions on the Byzantine Empire. The author would show them because it shows how Basil was the one getting all of the praise and and nobody is even !joking towards Jesus and their are people on their knees praising Basil when they should be praising Jesus. The Message they is being conveyed is that the "works of Jesus " are coming through Basil but not in the way Jesus intended. This reflects the culture at the time because during that time The Byzantine empire was converting to a Christianity influenced Empire and thpi have god making the decisions oif the empire instead of a ruler that would break down the empire.

  26. The people that are being represented in this painting are, The worshipers, Jesus, Brazil, The angels and the soldiers. I think that the reason why the artist would show them in the painting because they are showing us how much basil means to the empire. For an example, the people that are on the floor are the worshippers and the worshippers are worshiping basil for the things that he do for the empire . Another example is the angels and the angels are basically protecting him. Also, they have Jesus who is above basil because it shows how he's helping basil make the empire an good empire. The final example are the soldiers and I think they are on the wall to show that basil has help with making sure that the empire has what it needs and helping make sure that the empire is right. The message that the artist is trying to get out is that Christianity plays a big role in the empire and that its a peaceful place to be and that anyone is welcomed to be apart of it. It reflects the culture of the time period because it shows how much Christianity spreads and it shows how powerful their emperor was. -Jamiah Davis

  27. The people being recognized in the painting are Basil the second and some angels. The artist showed them in the painting because a lot of people worshiped Basil the second so he wanted to show people how much they worshiped him. The message the artist is sending is how he was a powerful man and a great man that people worshiped and like. It reflects the culture of the time period because they had emperors and most people worshiped there emperors and he was worshiped like an emperor.
